Financial Times names Trane Technologies one of Europe's Climate Leaders 2024

Brussels, Belgium, June 10, 2024 - Europe is the fastest warming continent and 2023 was the warmest year ever recorded, both in Europe and worldwide. That is why it is important to know which companies in Europe prove with hard figures that they are actually taking action in the field of climate.

Trane Technologies has been among Europe's Climate Leaders for four consecutive years
The international Financial Times, based on data from the market research firm Statista, annually lists the companies that are making the most progress in reducing their CO2 emissions.

Trane Technologies is one of 'Europe's Climate Leaders 2024', according to the Financial Times. Trane also received that title in 2023, 2022 and 2021.

Largest decrease in greenhouse gas emissions
Every company nowadays calls itself sustainable and climate-friendly. So it's interesting to see in which ways Trane Technologies and other European climate leaders are actually leading the way.

'Europe's Climate Leaders 2024' are the European companies whose scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emission intensity has fallen the most in a five-year period.

Decrease in emissions in five years, scope 1 and 2
The 2024 Financial Times study looks at the decline in the period between 2017 and 2022. The 2023 climate leaders included the decrease between 2016 and 2021, in 2022 between 2015 and 2020, and so on.

There are three categories of greenhouse gas emissions: scope 1, 2 and 3. The study only looks at scope 1 and 2, because it is clear that the company in question is responsible for the emissions.

Scope 1 includes the emissions emitted by a company's own properties, for example by burning natural gas to heat a commercial building.

Scope 2 includes, for example, emissions from power plants (i.e. with emissions elsewhere) for which a company purchases and uses the electricity.

With scope 3, it's hard to pinpoint one clear 'culprit' for the emissions — you quickly get double counting. These are indirect emissions related to the company's activities: the gasoline that an employee uses on their way to work, the production of the materials that the company purchases, the use of a product sold by the company, etc.

A roadmap to net zero emissions by 2050
For years, Trane Technologies has been at the forefront of reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in the areas of heating, cooling and food loss.

Through the Gigaton Challenge, for example, Trane Technologies is working with customers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1 billion metric tons by 2030. This reduction is equivalent to 2% of annual global emissions, or the annual emissions of Italy, France and the United Kingdom combined.

In addition, Trane Technologies has the long-term goal of net zero emissions by 2050. In 2023, Trane Technologies published the 'Net-Zero Roadmap', or the transition plan to achieve this.

The reduction targets are externally validated by the Science BasTargets Initiative (SBTi). This made the Trane Technologies the first in the industry.
